PRESS REALEASE - THE 16th DAYS WOLD WITHOUT CELLPHONE & SMARTPHONE : 6, 7, 8 February 2016

The theme of the 16th World Mobile and Smartphone-Free Day 6, 7, 8 February 2016 is risk.

While the arrival of mobile phones revolutionized the way we communicate as a society and significantly changed our working and personal relationships for better and for worse, the technological shift brought by smartphones has also brought certain risks to their users.

The 16th event will have four major themes:

-         The large increase in crime statistics linked to violent theft of smartphones on public transport

-         Potential for loss of sensitive personal and banking data by a simple SMS hack

-         The sex-tape phenomenon - using smartphones for blackmail

-         The smartphone and social media: a tool to facilitate burglary?

Note that Phil Marso isn’t suggesting that we turn off our smartphones during the 3 day period of 6, 7, 8 February. This annual meeting is intended to provoke debate around this communication tool.

For teachers wishing to share this discussion with their pupils, thirty two questions linked to this public meeting can be found here:
